Deputies say the chase ended after the suspect drove into a Natalie Road backyard, entered a home with people inside, and locked the door like the problem was now outside.

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL — A man accused of fleeing deputies in St. Augustine allegedly wrapped up his escape plan by running into an occupied home, locking the door, and immediately proving that hide-and-seek is much harder when law enforcement watched you pick the hiding spot.

According to St. Johns Citizen, deputies said the incident began last week when a deputy spotted 34-year-old Brandon Maxwell speeding near South Holmes Boulevard. The deputy attempted a traffic stop, but authorities say the driver sped off instead.

The chase reportedly moved through residential streets before the vehicle drove onto a property on Natalie Road and into the backyard area of a home. Deputies said Maxwell then exited the vehicle, ran toward the front of the house, went inside, and locked the door behind him.

Several people were reportedly inside the home at the time, which is generally considered a poor feature in a secret hideout.

Law enforcement followed him inside, safely escorted the occupants out, and took Maxwell into custody without further incident, according to the report. Officials also said he tried discarding items while inside the home.

After the arrest, deputies reported finding suspected narcotics on Maxwell, including a substance that later tested positive for fentanyl. St. Johns Citizen reports he faces multiple charges, including fleeing law enforcement, possession of controlled substances, resisting an officer without violence, and possession of drug equipment.

There are bad exits, and then there is allegedly turning a traffic stop into a home invasion speedrun with witnesses already inside and deputies already outside.

At publishing time, the house had returned to normal, though the front door was reportedly reviewing its guest policy.
