St. Augustine Hotel Guests Discover Hot Tub Amenity Now Includes Side Quest

A St. Augustine Best Western's hot tub became the unexpected stage for a Monday morning drama, ending with one man in jail and questions about poolside etiquette.

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL — A St. Augustine hotel hot tub briefly became the least relaxing amenity in town Monday morning after a fully clothed man allegedly climbed in, pushed another man, and threatened witnesses, according to St. Johns Citizen.

Police reportedly responded around 10:22 a.m. to the Best Western on North Ponce De Leon Boulevard after receiving a disturbance call. The man, identified in the report as 35 years old, was arrested after the incident.

The situation allegedly began when the man entered the hotel hot tub fully dressed, which is not technically how hot tubs are marketed, though it does add a level of suspense the hospitality industry generally tries to avoid.

Witnesses told police the man pushed one person and threatened others after getting into the hot tub. That turned what was presumably supposed to be a calm hotel morning into the kind of Florida side quest nobody selects at check-in.

Hotel hot tubs already require a certain amount of public trust. You are sharing hot, bubbling mystery water with strangers and hoping everyone involved understands the basic social contract. Clothes, threats, and police involvement are usually where that contract starts making other arrangements.

Because the incident involves homelessness, an arrest, and alleged threats, this is less a “laugh at the person” story and more another reminder that St. Augustine’s tourism economy and visible social problems often occupy the same few blocks, sometimes literally in the same hotel amenities.

Local homelessness resources are available through St. Johns County, including St. Francis House for emergency food and shelter and Home Again St. Johns for showers, laundry, case management, and resource referrals.

At publishing time, the hot tub had reportedly returned to normal operations, though guests were advised to approach all bubbles with healthy suspicion.
