St. Johns Cyclists Celebrate Bike To Work Day By Still Being Alive Five Days Later

Bike To Work Day was meant to promote healthier commutes. In St. Johns County, it mostly reminded cyclists that a painted white line is not the same thing as a survival plan.

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, FL — Five days after Bike To Work Day, local cyclists are celebrating the rare and beautiful gift of still being able to read this sentence.

The annual event encouraged residents to bike to work on May 15, despite recent reports showing St. Johns County logged more than 100 bicycle crashes, 3 deaths, and 114 injuries in 2025.

County officials say Bike To Work Day promotes health, sustainability, and the bold belief that a painted white line beside moving traffic has magical protective properties.

Cyclists are encouraged to wear helmets, use hand signals, and never assume a driver making eye contact has actually accepted the existence of bicycles.
